Stacking The Shelves [93]!

Stacking The Shelves is a meme hosted by Tynga’s Reviews and Reading Reality where we show what books we got recently. I do this post once a month.

Stacking The Shelves is all about sharing the books you’re adding to your shelves, be it buying or borrowing. From ‘real’ books you’ve purchased, a book you’ve borrowed, a book you’ve been given or an e-book, they can all be shared!

Blog Tour & Giveaway: Obedience [Ties That Bind 01] by Liza Snow!

The Official Soundtrack for Obedience

Believe it or not, when I wrote my first draft of Obedience, I had a soundtrack planned out for the book and intended it to be in the draft that was released on Amazon. I absolutely adore music. I come from a family of musicians, both bluegrass and folk musicians, and grew up exposed to all sorts of music. It weaves its way into every faucet of my life and it always is a part of my writing process. I always have ambient or acoustic music on when I draft.

Here’s the official Obedience playlist for you to enjoy! I didn’t actually go through every single song in the playlist so I leave out chapters with big spoilers so you can check the book out, but you can enjoy the playlist on Spotify, and I left you some of the bigger broader chapters with explanations!

Chapter 1 - Serse “Ombra mai fu”

The reason I picked this song for the first chapter was because it starts out with Cassandra Blackstone, my lead female character’s audition to the Dreamers Academy, one of the main settings of the book. She auditions with this song, which you learn a lot more about through the narration of Chandler in this chapter, including that it is one of his favorite opera songs.

Chapter 2 - Complicated

Without giving away spoilers for the chapter “things get complicated” in this first Cassandra chapter. She’s expecting things to go a certain way, and, as with most books, the authors don’t let it go in their favor. I still feel a little bad for her even to this day.

Chapter 3 - I Put A Spell On You

I love this Annie Lennox song. It’s a classic, and it absolutely fits this chapter, another Cassandra chapter, where she ventures to another interesting setting within the books small little fictional city of Acrefort, New York. You learn some fun things things chapter, and Cassandra’s world definitely shifts by the end of it.

Chapter 4 - My Stupid Mouth

Oh, Chandler. This couldn’t have been a more befitting song for him this chapter. He’s trying to recover from some…lapses in judgment, for lack of a better way of putting it without giving spoilers. You’ll see Chandler does this quite a few times in the book. He always has the best of intentions but sometimes his emotions cloud his thinking.

Chapter 5 - Into You

This chapter is from Cassandra’s perspective, and it’s after a handful of things have gone down in the book. From Cassandra’s point of view, there’s definitely some feelings going on she’s trying to deal with at this point, and she’s starting to struggle when she meets up with Chandler for her first private lessons with the aerial silks… I thought this song very much encompassed Cassandra’s emotions both in this chapter, and just in general with her feelings about Chandler.

Chapter 6 - Can’t Get You Out of My Head

One of my favorite Chandler chapters in the entire book. It’s when we start to see him unravel a little bit, and this Kylie Minogue song encompasses his emotions in this chapter and scene absolutely spot on. It’s evident that Cassandra is more accepting of what is going on with her feelings about things at this point, whereas Chandler is fighting his feelings at every turn.

Chapter 10 - Fire and Rain

I wanted to talk about my choice of this James Taylor song for Chapter 10. The reason I picked it has everything to do with the last parts of the song and what happened to Cassandra as a child and when she is triggered in this scene. I absolutely adore James Taylor and I felt like this song very much encompassed those feelings she had to be feeling in those moments, and in other moments when these memories came up for her.

Chapter 11 - Everything Has Changed

Oh my God I love this Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift song, and I felt like it fit this chapter so much. This is a pretty big Chandler chapter, and I won’t give away spoilers, but the title of the song says it all. There’s a big shift in this chapter, and I absolutely adore the scene in Soliel Theater between Cassandra and Chandler. There’s also lyrics about green eyes in that song, and I couldn’t help myself after that haha.

Chapter 13 - Do You Want To Touch Me

Man I can’t give spoilers!!!! This is a Chandler chapter, and basically Chandler has put himself in a terrible position because he’s fighting all these constant feelings for his student, that he very much is falling for and is infatuated with and then here come all of these sexual feelings on top of it when he puts himself in a very precarious position because he let’s temptation get the best of him. These are some of my favorite Chandler chapters too.

Chapter 15 - You’re Such A

I heard this Hailee Steinfeld song when it first came out and I remembered it when I was writing this chapter. It totally encompasses Cassandra’s feelings toward Chandler and how wound up she is. I absolutely love it. Random quote from the book with no context so not to give spoilers. “Are you fucking five years old or something?”

Chapter 18 - The Flower Duet from Lakme

Before I started the audiobook production, this was my favorite chapter in the entire book. I am not going to talk about it too much again to not give away spoilers, but it’s from Chandler’s perspective, and it is the most beautiful writing I’ve ever done in my entire life. And this song is actually in this chapter, they perform in the silks to it. It’s also in the audiobook! When Daniel Zbel, who voices Chandler, sent it back to me to listen to for the first time, first of all he knocked the narration out of the freaking park, but he also put music to the audio. I have never cried so hard in my life. This song always hits me in the feels, it’s gorgeous.

Chapter 21 - Fix You

Coldplay is up there for some of my favorite listens for me. I absolutely love them to pieces, and it includes this song. There’s not a lot of spoilers for this chapter, but basically you’ll learn that Chandler injured his knee in the book and it gives him a lot of problems. He is kind of a lone wolf kind of guy and doesn’t get a lot of affection or people helping him out with things, but in this chapter, Cassandra helps him when his knee is hurting pretty bad, by trying to alleviate some of the pain for him. It’s something Chandler isn’t used to people doing. I love this little chapter so much, and it is just as beautiful with the audiobook. But this song definitely fits that chapter.

I hope you enjoyed some of the soundtrack from my book! The songs that are on the Spotify playlist definitely represent the chapters pretty well, so hopefully it’ll give you a little bit of an idea about my book.

If you enjoy music, please consider listening to the full-cast narrated audiobook version of my book, too. There’s actually a lot of music and cool sound effects that are incorporated with it, and it makes for a really wild experience! You even get an entire chapter where it feels like you’re sitting in the audience watching a circus show. It is so cool!

Cassandra

Growing up, I was mesmerized by a man soaring the skies.
The greatest silk aerialist in the world, Chandler Moreau.

He was once my lifeline, the dream I clung to after my parents died. I’ve always believed he was my destiny. To join him at the Dreamers Academy. To perform for him.

To soar with him.

He’s more than I ever imagined. Far more than a mentor. When I am high in the silks, turning, flying, falling, he’s my lifeline once again. Twisting my heart and my body into knots like the knots of his beloved Japanese rope bondage, Shibari.

I don’t want to live without him. With each lesson, each touch, I crave more. Only he can satisfy me. And only he can destroy me…

But I must keep him safe from the past that relentlessly follows me.

Chandler

She is my protégé, the student I’ve been waiting to take under my wing for my entire career. Someone with whom I could share my lifelong journey in my family’s circus, Cirque du Lys.

I never intended to fall in love with the student I was supposed to protect—from myself and the demons that lurk in my shadows. But sometimes fate has other plans.

Cassandra, my beautiful butterfly. I know she’s off limits. Forbidden. Still, I want her in my life. My heart. My bed.

My grandfather's taunting words still linger.
Mieux vaut plier que rompre.
Adapt and survive.

It’s what we must do. Cassandra and I share a history that entwines us more than the silks we’ve spent our lives mastering ever could.

There are secrets from the past that must never be told. And truths that could destroy what we’ve just begun…

Book Blitz & Giveaway: Filthy Desires [Professors of Westview University 02] by R.M. Grey!

Excerpt!

“Okay, I’ll have dinner with you, but give me your phone,” she demanded. I handed her my phone; she tapped something on it, then handed it back. “You have my number now. Text me about dinner. I’ll see you in class, professor.” She winked before she turned on her heel and left my office.
Looking down at my phone, I almost laughed out loud. She saved her contact as Ree with a cat emoji.
LUCAS: Hello, kitten. Now you have my number. I’ll send more details about dinner in a couple days. —Sir
REESE: Hello, Sir. I hope I don’t regret having dinner with you.
LUCAS: You’ll be glad you went. Now, go study, kitten.
   REESE: Yes, Sir.
A wide smile grew on my face. Finding Reese felt like torture. If I can survive that, I can manage a few more days not touching her body and kissing her sweet lips, right?

School’s my priority. All I do is eat, sleep, and study. My best friend says I need to loosen up and live a little. So I did.

I had one passionate night with billionaire playboy, Lucas Blessington. He’s tall, rich, and handsome, and can get any girl he wants. I’m just another woman that he can add to his long list of one night stands.

When he walks into my class and announces that he is the guest professor for the rest of the semester, I want to hide. Little did I know he did his research on me and managed a way back to his alma mater, Westview University, to continue where we left off from our night together.

I don’t know what’s riskier: having sex with my professor or having sex with a billionaire playboy? Either way, I’m risking my future and will have my heart broken by him anyway.

Pre-Order Blitz: Beauty and the Bruiser [Philadelphia Tyrant Hockey 01] by Josie Blake!

Nanny for a professional hockey player? Please. More like beauty for the beast.

The job is straightforward. Single dad Duke York needs a caretaker for his seven-year-old daughter during the hockey season, bonus if that person can help her with her school work. His team is rebuilding, and he plans to retire at the end of the year. This is his last chance to make a run at the cup. Right now, I have the time and the education to do this work.

Except there should be a disclaimer in the job description about Duke. He’s hot as sin, and the grizzled hockey veteran takes brooding to the next level. I need the cash, though, and the job offers housing as part of its compensation. Since I have nowhere to live—again—it’s the perfect situation. But I didn’t expect to find such a fascinating man under Duke’s gruff exterior, and the more I get to know the father and daughter duo, the more I risk losing my heart to them both.

My real life has never included any fairy-tale endings. But maybe this temporary job could be the beginning of all of our happily ever afters…

Book Blitz & Giveaway: Wooded Discovery [Spellbound Chronicles 01] by B.B. Swa!

Excerpt!

The towel I’m wrapped in smells like Mom’s favorite mountain-scented fabric softener. A clean air smell drifts from the wet terry cloth, mixing with the biting scent of chlorine from the pool water in my hair. Both normal smells. Both familiar. Neither helps me relax after hearing their detailed description of what I am.
Mom sits across from me at our kitchen table, sipping from her favorite purple coffee cup. Dad sits in the chair next to Mom. Take out the trash. Pick up your dirty underwear. Oh, by the way, you’re a wizard.
“Congratulations.” Dad toasts me with his cup. “You’ve transmogrified.”
He slurps his coffee. The clock ticks on the wall over the counter. The refrigerator hums as the ice maker kicks on.
   And I’m a wizard.
(Note to self: J.K. Rowling was full of crap. Finding out you’re a wizard sucks.)
“What does that mean?” More Latin?
   “Changed, honey, into a wizard.”
We sit in silence for a moment. Mom crosses her legs and kicks her foot back and forth, wiggling the table with her. Dad shakes, too, bouncing his knees. Vibrations from their movements travel through the wooden tabletop. Like they’re five and Christmas has come early.
All I want is to wake up from this weird dream, finish high school, and go away to college.
But as much as I want to argue with them, I can’t. Mom froze my body with her mind. I jumped out a window and flew. Dad flew after me. On a scale of one-to-ten, that’s enough weirdness to score a one hundred on the weird-shit-o-meter. Finding out I’m a wizard sounds less insane by comparison.

His senior year just turned magical. Now if only he can win his crush’s affections without getting killed.

Seventeen-year-old Zaidyn Mitchell would rather not be weird. But nothing can be stranger than when the self-proclaimed bookworm wakes up one night, floating several feet above his bed. Still desperate to fit in after his parents unceremoniously unlocked his abilities, all Zaidyn wants is to date the girl of his dreams.

With his magic a little uncontrolled, the budding wizard finally makes a move and promises his beautiful classmate to help stop a construction project from destroying the nearby woods. But when an unknown force attacks and tries to separate them, Zaidyn fears this supernatural world is about to send them to their doom.

Can the teen would-be hero find a way to save them both?

Book Blitz & Giveaway: We Are All Villains Here [We Are All Villains Here 01] by Quinn Blackbird!

Excerpt!

‘Bitches,’ Gigi mutters to herself. ‘Crazy, fucking bitches.’
With that, she yanks open the stubborn cheap zip on the backpack and wanders to the brown arched wardrobe.
Since she was little, she's been half-convinced that this piece of shit wardrobe was built way back when the early settlers built this town—then they left it here in an abandoned cabin in the poor end that never quite took off like they had hoped. Also, this piece of shit has a family of moths that live inside it.
Gigi heaves yet another sigh as if to brace herself for the moths, at least one or two will swarm her, and she reaches for the cold brass knob.
   She doesn't pull.
   Doesn't get the chance to.
   Her hand grips, but then—
From the inside, the doors burst open. The edge of one smacks into her, hard.
Gigi staggers back, the bag nearly slipping out of her grip.
She blinks, once, twice, and stares into the pair of eyes that gleam from the shadows of the wardrobe. The ones looking right at her.
The light is too dim in here, she can’t make out much more than those eyes… watching her from between clothes on hangers. No face, no body, nothing but eyes.
Frozen like time itself in this eternal moment, where not even her heart beats, she just stands…
   Inside the wardrobe, he stands...
And as he straightens up, he becomes a ‘he’. Tall, broad-shouldered, so fucking large in how he towers over her. Sheathed in all black, a black sweater, black combat pants, black boots.
But the disturbing part, the piece he wears that has the breath knocked out of her, is a rough-textured hood. It’s pulled over his face, a sack of sorts, with two slanted holes cut out of it… where his eyes shine from. The darkest blue she’s ever seen, so perfectly deep like the far-out ocean, that she’s certain in her fleeting thought—contacts. Another piece of this disguise.
A wink of light pierces the dusty dullness between them.
Gigi looks down—just for a moment, not even a full second, at what caught the light. A knife.
   It's no kitchen knife either.
In his black leather gloved hand, is a hunting knife. Large, polished, and very fucking serrated.
Frozen no more, time shatters like a fallen ice block.
All at once, her chest rises with the air for a feral scream, her face contorts into the twisted look of horror and—just as she steps back… he steps out.
Heavy black boots thud loudly on the floorboards.
The knife is closer now, close enough to illuminate the blood stains that mark it. Crimson spots on the toes of the boots not far from the scuffed sneakers on her own feet.
And the only thing she has, firms in her tightening grip, the backpack. Weightless nearly. Might as well be a piece of paper on the wind.
But the very moment that time shatters and the scream rips through her small frame, she heaves up the bag like it's filled with rocks and stones and padlocks—and she whacks it over his potato sack hood.
A split second of distraction, of his blindness even if only for a heartbeat.
That's all she has, and she uses it.
Turning on her heels so fast her that her ankles should snap, she feels the pain sear through her, but it doesn't even slow her down.
Gigi is running. She is barreling out of the room in a fast terrified breath—and right behind her is the thump of the backpack hitting a wall, then the indescribably heavy bounding noise of boots chasing her out into the hall.
   Boom,
   Boom,
   Boom.
The darkness out in the hall is thick and instant but Gigi doesn't falter.
She races down the narrow way, hearing the crashes behind her, deafening smashes of family portraits and vases knocked out of their place to shatter on the floorboards. Like he’s intentionally wrecking all that he nears.
   It only feeds her panic.
Somehow, she doesn't hear her own screams over all that noise, as though even her own wild heartbeat thumping against her eardrums is louder than her eternal shrieking.
   Her cries cut off.
The weight of a solid strong body smacks right into her back.
   She's thrown off her feet.

Sailors Bay has a bit of a problem… a serial killer problem.

What should be a sleepy old fishing town—a place so silent and forgotten that it slips off the map—has murder in the air and secrets poisoning the heart of the town.
Here… no one is safe when a masked killer starts terrorising the town.

Blood Hood is coming after them: Billie—from the wrong side of the tracks—and her friends… The ones who have a deadly secret of their own, one they kept for seven years… a dark secret that Blood Hood seems to know all about.

One by one, Blood Hood hunts them down to avenge the murder that started it all.

And Billie finds herself running from Blood Hood as well as the love of her life and ex, Dalton.

With slashed-up bodies piling up all over, Billie flees more than a masked killer… Dalton hunts her to every corner of Sailors Bay, intent on stealing her back… whether she wants him to or not.

Love is meant to flourish. Poison corrupts.
Poison is all I know.

We are all villains here….

Blog Tour & Giveaway: I'll Love You Tomorrow [The Trading Heartbeats Trilogy 03] by Julie Navickas!

Excerpt!

Her eyes glimmered under the streetlights, their dark brown hue lit up by the dazzling glow of the city. She smiled, stepping closer to his body to allow a couple to pass behind her. The evening breeze caught in her hair, each of her dark strands dancing across her shoulders.
His body warmed as she moved nearer, the smile on her lips squeezing his heartstrings with the ghosts of the past. Their spontaneous wedding day flashed before his eyes… the red eye flight to Vegas… the little white wedding chapel… and the celebratory…
“Hot dogs,” he answered, gripping her hand and leading the way down the Strip.
She snorted. “Well, tradition, I guess.”
Wrapping his arm around her waist, he pointed to their right. “Come on, I think the food trucks are this way. At least they used to be.”
Nodding, she fell in step with his long strides as they dodged and weaved in and out of the mob of tourists ready to experience the nightlife of the adult playground. On their right, the fountains of the Bellagio burst to life—swaying in synchronization—lit up by the golden lights reflected in the pool.
“I think that’s where Austin wants to propose tomorrow.” Lauren pointed to the grand hotel and dancing fountains.
Swarms of people lined the railing, ogling the show.
“Why did he need us here then? He’ll have hundreds of people surrounding him.”
She rolled her eyes. “Oh, come on. I think it’s kind of sweet that he wants to make it a big deal!”
“And you think that’s what Casey wants? A spectacle?”
Frowning, Lauren gripped his upper arm and squeezed as they crossed the street, leaving the magnificent fountains behind.
His stomach dipped at the pinch of her fingers on his bare skin.
“I think what Casey wants most… is just Austin. It doesn’t matter how.”
The greasy scent of street food pummeled into his nostrils as a line of white trucks and picnic tables appeared down a side street. Mitch pointed at the second truck, the words ‘Hotdogs in a Hurry’ painted in big bold yellow letters. “And what is it that you want most?”
What do you want? A divorce? Or…
She scrunched her nose and shrugged. “Chicago style, I guess?”
   I didn’t really mean hotdogs…
Grinning, he gripped her hand and led her over to the truck to place their order. The desert wind picked up, ruffling through his hair as a chill tingled his skin.
“Will you hold my purse for a second?” Pushing the bag toward his chest, she pulled her dark hair back into a ponytail, wrapping the long strands together with a pink tie from her wrist. Her high cheekbones stood out, complemented by the rosy hue growing on her skin. She grinned, dropping her gaze as her natural beauty punctured his heart, reminiscent of the first day they met. “What?”
The words spilled from his lips, unfiltered. “You look really pretty tonight.”

Follow your heart, even if it takes you all the way to Las Vegas.

For precisely $102 dollars, Mitch Benson and Lauren Templeton marry in a 15-minute ceremony inside a little Las Vegas chapel. Soulmates since elementary school, nothing makes more sense than eloping to Sin City for a secret wedding.

But seven years later, the brilliant glare from the city of lights has faded.

Scratch that. The bulbs are burnt out.

In fact, the wiring may have been faulty all along.

Bitterly accepting that their marriage is coming to an end, Mitch and Lauren stray further and further from the love that once blossomed on the playground of their youth.

Lauren sells her soul to Pier Ninety-Two, her once-fabulous restaurant in downtown Los Angeles now a sad shadow in the Saturday night party scene. And Mitch falls into the arms—er, legs—of none other than childhood enemy, Tess Browning.

Devastated by the direction their love has spiraled, Mitch and Lauren make one last trip to the city of second chances, hoping to turn their pennies into the million-dollar love they once shared.

Will their last roll be a miracle—or a mirage—in the desert?
