Book Blitz & Giveaway: Checking Mr. Wrong [Love in Maple Falls] by Anne Kemp!

Excerpt!

Mabel's POV

My mother and I have a way of bickering that would make a therapist cringe—or drive them straight to their own therapist after one session with us. I’ve often thought over the years it might be our love language, but even my old friend Neesha thinks it’s odd how my mother can show one face to Maple Falls while reserving another one only for me.
I go back to scanning the room as she talks to me. She’s moved on, chatting away about her plans for Maple Fest and an Ice Breakers-themed brunch she wants to host, when my gaze lands on someone I am not at all prepared to deal with, at least not right now.
Asher sits at a corner booth, with someone I guess is a fellow hockey player, judging by his size, hunched over what looks like the world’s most serious plate of pancakes. The expression on Asher’s face is like he’s trying to solve complex mathematical equations with syrup patterns. He’s wearing a baseball cap pulled low, probably thinking it makes him invisible in a town where everyone knows everyone’s breakfast order by heart.
Our eyes meet across the diner for exactly 2.3 seconds—long enough for my stomach to do something that feels suspiciously like figure skating—and instead of looking away like a normal person trying to lie low, his whole face lights up with this ridiculously genuine smile. Like spotting me in a crowded diner just made his entire morning. Real subtle, hotshot.
Mom’s still talking, prattling on about coordinating with the mayor’s office and needing my help with decorations—but her words are starting to fade into the background. Asher looks up again, catching me mid-stare. This time, he doesn’t look away immediately, and I don’t either. Instead, I feel the corners of my traitorous mouth tug upward, unbidden and entirely against my better judgment.
Great, now I’m staring back at him like some kind of diner stalker with a suspiciously enthusiastic grin. Fast as I can, I clamp down on it with such force my jaw practically clicks, replacing it with what I hope is a neutral expression.
“Mabel?” Mom’s voice cuts through my mental spiral. “Are you even listening to me?”
“Yes,” I lie, still peripherally aware of the hockey player who’s now paying way too much attention to his coffee cup. “Ice Breakers brunch. Very...brunchy.”
Mom follows my line of sight, and I watch her entire demeanor shift from frustrated mother to practically vibrating with small-town excitement. “Oh my goodness, is that—”
Before I can groan or stick out my foot to trip her as she takes off, Mom is in Mary-Ellen mode and headed straight for their table. Honestly, she’s such a stalker but I love her.
“Well, hello, Carson,” Mom says. She turns to me knowingly. “We met at the farmers’ market, what, last week?”
“Yes, ma’am. You’re the reason I’m here today. You told me about Shirley May’s pancakes, so I’m here to have some.” He looks at me and holds out his hand. “Hi, I’m Carson.”
“Carson Crane, also known as Bama,” I say, shaking his hand. “I’m Mabel McCluskey, her daughter but also a reporter for Athletic Edge.”
Carson grins. “Very cool. You in town for a visit?”
“Here for some interviews,” I say, casting a look at Asher before snapping my attention back to Carson. “Would love to talk to you at some point, if you don’t mind?”
“Hand me your phone,” he says, holding out his hand. “I’ll give you my cell. Let me know when and I’m happy to talk.”
After he adds himself as a new contact and hands me my phone back, he points across the table to his companion while I slide into a seat at the empty booth opposite them. “Have you ladies met Asher yet?”
“Not me, but”—Mom flicks her hand my way as she joins me—“apparently my daughter has.”
Asher’s lips are pulled up at the corners with the biggest smile, but when I meet his gaze all I see in his eyes reflected back at me is pure delight. Mischief even. He taps his mouth.
“How’s it going?” he asks while Carson and my mother exchange a look.
“It’s fine, thank you. All fixed.” I grab a menu off a nearby table and flip it open, pretending there’s a need to scan it right now. I highly doubt Shirley May has changed anything on this menu since she opened her doors, but today I’m going to make sure of it.
“She’s not allowed solid foods for another hour,” my mother explains as if someone asked. She looks at Carson and Asher as she tosses a sympathetic look my way. “Chipped front tooth.”“Mom.” The horror. She’s always loved to tell everyone about my business. Don’t get me started on my first menstrual cycle. She announced it to the church choir. “Carson and Asher don’t need to know…”

She’s a grump with a grudge. He’s a sweetheart with a slapshot. Sparks were expected, but the fireworks? Pure magic.

Mabel
Returning to Maple Falls wasn’t part of my five-year plan—or my backup plan. Or any plan, really. But here I am, back in my quirky hometown, dodging my mother’s judgment and trying not to cringe every time someone mentions the viral moment. (Yes, that one. No, I don’t want to talk about it.)

When my editor sends me to cover the NHL’s shiny new team, the Ice Breakers, I’m all in—until I meet Asher Tremblay. He’s their too-charming defenseman with a knack for wrecking my focus and my sanity. Equal parts infuriating and irresistible, but falling for him? Not on my agenda. Nope.

Asher
I’ve worked my whole life to make it in the NHL. A new team means a fresh start, and I won’t let anything distract me—least of all a snarky reporter who seems determined to hate me on sight.

But the more I see Mabel, the more I want to know what’s behind her walls. She’s fire and chaos, and I’ve spent my whole life playing it safe. Maybe she’s exactly what I need. I came to Maple Falls to chase my dream, but now all I want is her.

Book Blitz & Giveaway: The Unlikely Spare [Unlikely Dilemmas 03] by Jax Calder!

Excerpt!

A violent rustling erupts from a nearby thicket, and something bursts upward in an explosion of noise and movement, heading directly toward Nicholas’s face.
My training kicks in. Movement equals threat, threat equals action.
I launch forward, tackling Nicholas sideways. We hit the ground hard, my body curving protectively over his. One of my arms cradles the back of his head, preventing it from cracking against the frozen earth while my torso shields his. My free hand reaches instinctively for my weapon.
Only then do I register wings beating frantically above us.
   Fuck.
Nicholas lies perfectly still beneath me, those winter-ocean eyes wide with shock. My face hovers inches from his, close enough to count individual eyelashes. His breath comes in short puffs, visible in the cold air between us.
For a few heartbeats, we simply stare at each other.
“That,” Nicholas says finally, voice strained, “was a partridge. Not an assassin.”
I’m suddenly acutely aware of every point where our bodies connect. My chest against his, my leg between his thighs, my hand still cradling his head.
His hair is soft, dark silk under my calloused palms. The scent of his cologne fills my nostrils, something crisp and woodsy. His pupils have dilated, black nearly swallowing that impossible blue.
His lips part, just a fraction, and fuck if I don’t track the movement like it matters.
Heat spreads from every point where we’re pressed together. A flush crawls up his neck. I know I should look away, but I can’t.
Why the hell can’t I drag my eyes away from this man’s face?
The dogs are circling us, the yellow retriever licking enthusiastically at Nicholas’s ear.
“I’d really appreciate it,” Nicholas continues in an icy tone, “if you could remove your elbow from my spleen.”
Fuck. I roll away from him, my knee sinking into the frozen mud with a squelch as I get to my feet.
Nicholas remains splayed on the ground, leaves tangled in his dark hair, a smudge of dirt across his cheek.
“We must stop this little trend of finding ourselves in compromising positions,” he says as he pushes himself up on his elbows. “At this rate, I’ll need to start charging you rent for all the time you spend in my personal space.”
He reaches up a hand imperiously.

What happens when a prince falls for the undercover agent pretending to be his bodyguard?

Nicholas
I’m the spare, the younger brother of the Prince of Wales. Ever since I was propelled up the order of succession, my job description has been: Exist. Don’t embarrass the Crown. Repeat.

After a security scandal, I’m assigned a new bodyguard. A hulking, brooding Irishman who glowers at me like I’ve personally offended his ancestors. He’s the first to be completely immune to my charm, which is rather inconvenient when you’ve always wielded wit like a defensive weapon.

And why I feel the need to continue trying to impress Officer O’Connell is anyone’s guess.

My upcoming royal tour of Australia and New Zealand should be a nice chance to escape the British winter and bask in some Southern Hemisphere sunshine. But it turns out that representing the monarchy in former colonial countries means confronting some uncomfortable truths about how all those Crown Jewels ended up in my family’s vaults.

And the whole visit would really be far more enjoyable if someone wasn’t trying to kill me.

Eoin
I’ve clawed my way from the slums of Ireland to the top level of Scotland Yard’s undercover agents. But a deep security breach within the force has me investigating my own colleagues while playing bodyguard to a privileged prince on a tour Down Under.

Something about Prince Nicholas gets under my skin like shrapnel I can’t dig out.

Still, I’m a professional. I can handle one posh git with a smart mouth.

But as we navigate koala cuddling sessions, didgeridoo lessons, and deadly spiders in hotel rooms, I see beneath Nicholas’s princely façade. I’m supposed to uncover which of my fellow bodyguards is a threat to Prince Nicholas, not become obsessed with the most complex, fascinating pain in my arse I’ve ever met.

The line between duty and desire blurs with each passing day and the danger to Nicholas intensifies.

How can I maintain my cover, protect Nicholas, and resist the urge to press him against the nearest wall and kiss that smirk off his face?

Book Blitz & Giveaway: Ashes and Echoes by Jo-Anne Van Gelder!

Excerpt!

Prologue

   There were three rules.
   One: Don’t ask questions.
   Two: Don’t keep records.
Three: If something goes wrong, disappear.
Elise memorised them before she knew what they meant. Before she understood what kind of house she lived in. What kind of programme she had been born into. What kind of silence the adults needed in order to survive. They were never written down. Just repeated in whispers. Embedded in routine. Hidden in the space between a closed door and a too-long pause.
The files were kept in a box under Ian’s bed. Locked, of course—but not well. She picked the clasp with a bobby pin when she was twelve and didn’t breathe again until she was fourteen.
Inside: incident reports, training forms, assessment notes. Faces she didn’t know. Names she couldn’t place. Her own wasn’t among them. That unsettled her more than if it had been.
   She never told Grace.
   She told no one.
   But she remembered.
   Not everything. Just enough.
Just the names that seemed misfiled.
The dates that didn’t line up.
The symbols that kept reappearing—on files, in margins, on lanyards and notebooks.
And once, scratched into the underside of a metal desk in the old admin wing: a daisy. Faint, but deliberate.
   She started drawing them, too.
On the inside of her sleeve. In the dust on her windowsill. With steam on the bathroom mirror.
By the time she turned fifteen, she no longer trusted the silence around her. She didn’t fear it, either. But she recognised it for what it was—a tool.
On the night of her birthday, she wrote a single line inside the fabric lining of her mattress, using the ink from a leaking pen:
If something happens to me, it wasn’t random. And it wasn’t right.
She drew a daisy beside it.
And smiled, like any other girl.

A missing friend. A locked estate. A note that says, I know what you did.

Three friends. One is missing. The truth won’t stay buried.

Mara hasn’t seen Elise in years—until a handwritten invitation pulls her back to the crumbling estate they swore they’d never return to.

But Elise isn’t there.
Her handbag is.
So is the daisy.
And a note that reads: I know what you did.

Now Mara and Jodie—the third in their fractured trio—are trapped. No cars. No signal. Nowhere to run.

The house is full of locked doors and old ghosts.
Every secret points back to that night.

Elise’s absence is only the beginning.

Some friendships end in silence.
Some secrets refuse to stay dead.

Book Blitz & Giveaway: Stalled Descent [DAG Team 04] by Kel O’Connor!

Excerpt!

They ordered non-alcoholic drinks, a charcuterie board, and a spread of fresh fruit.
They snacked their fill and then Archie said, “Here’s the best part.”
He pressed a button on the loveseat arm and his half changed into a lounger. Meret squealed and did the same to her side. Lying back, he turned his head to her, and she caught a glint of metal caught in his sweater collar.
She gestured. “You have something snagged. A necklace?”
His mouth became firm, suppressing a smile or a frown, she wasn’t sure. But he reached under his neckline, found the catch and carefully freed the chain. He handed the charm at the end over to her. She had to lean close to touch it, but she recognized it immediately. The chain was an improvement over the frazzled yarn it dangled from years ago.
Meret gasped. “You still have it?”
The coin had smoothed out with age and wear, the man’s profile on one side now only an outline. It was a silver 1965 dime from the United States. She remembered how Bakari would rub his thumb over the surface whenever he spoke of his father.
“He would bring me any foreign coins he found. This was the last one he gave me. Fitting it’s a fucking American one.” As always, he spat out the word “American,” like it left a nasty taste in his mouth. She never doubted it did.
He kept it in his pocket, always. One day, it wasn’t there, and he’d almost cried. She’d never seen him in such a panic. After a frantic search, it was finally found between his pallet bed and the wall. They’d paid a jeweler to punch a hole in it, and she’d swiped a length of yarn so he could wear it close to his heart.
As special as the token was, she was surprised he still wore it. But considering he had been out for vengeance for his father and his most recent realization, it was fitting.
“I’m glad you still have it,” she whispered, passing the necklace back to him.
He didn’t reply, simply attached the clasp behind his neck and tucked it back under his sweater. Meret took the hint. No bringing up his parents right now.
“I wish I had a token for my grandfather,” she said. “But I do have this.”
She pulled the loafer off her right foot and contorted so he could see the tattoo running across the outside of her foot: hakbang na may layunin.
“Damn.” Archie shook his head. “I thought I knew languages, but I don’t recognize any of those words.”
She grinned. “I picked Filipino because it would be difficult for an average person to translate. It means ‘step with purpose.’ My Jaddi’s favorite saying.”
“Good one,” he agreed with a subdued smile. “Very unlike you as a child.”
She laughed. “Exactly. It’s there to remind me. Although, I think I’ve been too cautious for the past few years. I need to find a happy medium. Thanks for helping me reclaim some of my courage,” she finished with a pat on his arm.
His blush was so charming, she waited until finally giving him an out. “I can’t believe we did it. We freed everyone.”
“Yeah.” The ghost smile was back.

A man forced to work for the enemy and a woman on the run from her past…

To infiltrate the impenetrable Red Winter compound, Archie needs help from the team he deceived and the one person who truly knows him—Meret Shahid, his childhood partner-in-crime turned photographer. The girl who once earned the nickname “the Imp” in their small Iranian village might be his only shot at redemption. But Meret has her own demons from Red Winter, and returning to the organization she barely escaped could cost her everything.

As Archie grapples with guilt over his betrayal and his growing feelings for Meret, they must navigate new threats, uneasy alliances, and shocking revelations. The mission is clear: destroy Red Winter’s empire and free the innocent families trapped within it.

But the price of redemption may be higher than either of them is willing to pay.

Blog Tour & Giveaway: Shaman by Tam DeRudder Jackson!

Excerpt!

Renleigh flopped down into a wingback chair. “Want to play a game?”
Not bothering to hide his smirk, Jaime replied, “Strip poker? Absolutely.”
Shaking her head, she blew out a breath. “The two of us are never getting naked together.”
   “Never is a long time.”
For a drawn-out moment, their eyes locked, and Jaime didn’t miss the way Renleigh’s widened and darkened. Only a fraction, but enough to tell him she’d possibly entertained the idea of getting naked with him already. He hoped so.

A druid straddles the line between light and darkness . . .

Renleigh Rogan keeps to herself in her remote Montana cabin, tending her plants and honing her protection spells. Only occasionally does she indulge her shape-shifting abilities… Called to Scotland in the middle of the night to help heal a rogue warrior, her first instinct is to ignore the summons, but danger lies in disobeying a powerful goddess.

A rogue is caught in a celestial tug-o-war . . .

Jamie Lennox gave up the warrior community long ago, voluntarily fighting in the Morrigan’s rogue army. Cocky, and one of the most accomplished swordsman in the community, he’s the perfect weapon for taking the warriors the Morrigan covets most. Yet when he loses a pivotal battle, she turns on him, leaving him injured and lost in a no-man’s land between good and evil, a place no warrior or rogue can exist for long. Luckily for him, a beautiful druid has come to his rescue, even if she’s saving him against her will.

Two people are brought together by a force they never saw coming . . .

The fact Jaime Lennox looks like a fallen angel has nothing to do with Renleigh’s decision to come to his aid. His sexy come-ons do not intrigue her either—not even a little bit. Nor does the mysterious past he hides. While the two of them spar inside an enchanted cottage in the Highlands, overhead, a celestial storm is brewing, one that will require each of them to decide what truly matters—their beliefs about themselves and each other or the truth that will set their love free.

Book Blitz & Giveaway: Murder, Mystery and Misdirection [Erin Baily in Franklin Paranormal Mystery 03] by Pamela McCord!

Excerpt!

   “Peekaboo!”
I burst through the front door, Ryan in my wake. I stopped in the hallway and looked for any sign of the orange cat who was currently on my sugar (I don’t like to swear) list. It only took a moment before the little creature stepped primly into the hall.
“I was napping,” the grumpy feline said, shooting me a gold-eyed glare. She waited for me to continue.
“I acknowledged them,” I said, deadpan. Just what my cat warned me not to do.
“Oh.” Peekaboo’s snooty manner fell away, and she lowered those gold eyes.
“That’s all you have to say?” I stood, arms crossed, my eyes shooting daggers. Ryan, my boyfriend, stood mutely watching. He couldn’t hear Peekaboo.
But I could. Oh, boy, could I. My sweet little inherited orange cat bestowed on me, by way of tripping me on my way down the front porch steps, the “gift” of being able to communicate with her. Oh, and see ghosts. To be fair, her motives were pure. She needed me to have a near-death experience so I’d wake up and be able to listen to her.
Maybe I should back up, so you know what I’m talking about.
I used to live in Los Angeles. When I was twenty-one, I broke up a mugging and saved a dear little old lady. She was so grateful that seven years later she left me her estate in her will.
In addition to a house, an SUV and a large amount of money, I inherited Peekaboo, the talking cat. Of course, I didn’t know she was a talking cat at the time. After glaring at me for a few days, she apparently thought I was hopeless and pushed me down the stairs. So, I woke up in the hospital and saw a doctor with a clipboard walk through a wall. But that’s really immaterial to my story. My neighbor, who found me splayed out on the porch steps, called 911. When I was released from the hospital, Elsie, the neighbor, told me I’d flatlined and it took ten minutes of the paddles to bring me back to life.
As I hobbled into my house after Elsie brought me home from the hospital and made sure I was all right to be left alone, subject cat started talking to me. I thought I must have a brain tumor…somebody get me back to the hospital! I grabbed the fireplace poker and used it to keep her at bay. I think she may have rolled her eyes at me.
Then, before I was comfortable that she was talking…and I could understand her…she trotted out the ghost of Alice, the sweet little old lady who’d left me her house. Apparently, this whole episode was so I could see Alice and solve her murder.

Hold onto your coffee and get ready to dive into the charmingly quirky world of Franklin, Tennessee. Erin Bailey never expected her new Southern estate to come with a talking cat named Peekaboo and a parade of ghostly visitors, giving her life a supernatural twist beyond even her wildest imaginings.

In “Murder, Mystery and Misdirection,” Erin becomes embroiled in yet another haunting mystery when her neighbor, Derek, vanishes under suspicious circumstances. As she delves into the secrets surrounding Derek’s disappearance, Erin must navigate the demands of an irate spirit who wishes she’d mind her own business, and the wife he left behind who would prefer that Erin not meddle in her personal life. Despite her initial distaste for Derek, an admittedly abusive husband, Erin is determined to help his pesky ghost cross over—all with her signature wit and relatable charm.

With the assistance of her best friend Susie, a podcast-loving sidekick, Detective Ryan Cahill, the handsome detective who has captured Erin’s heart, and DC, a private investigator and Susie’s boyfriend, Erin faces breathtaking revelations and dangerous discoveries. Add in an unexpected visit from Susie’s all-knowing Italian mother, bringing her own mix of culinary talents and psychic insight, and Erin’s world becomes as dizzyingly delightful as it is unpredictable.

Immerse yourself in a tale where cozy meets paranormal, filled with laughter and suspense. When your closest advisor is a snarky orange cat and your sleuthing targets the world of the dead, nothing is off-limits.

Perfect for fans of mystery interwoven with humor, “Murder, Mystery and Misdirection” promises a journey that’s both heartwarming and hilariously unpredictable—because unraveling a murder mystery is just another day in the life when your companions are as spectral and sassy as the enigmatic Peekaboo.

Join Erin as she dances through danger, one ghostly encounter at a time!

Book Blitz & Giveaway: Offside and Off-Limits [Love in Maple Falls] by Kate O’Keeffe!

Excerpt!

What am I doing? I promised myself I wouldn't film any cheesy, overdone dancing hockey players when I took this job, and what am I doing right this very moment? Filming three super big guys, wearing all their game day gear, dancing to that catchy Rosé and Bruno Mars' song "APT" like a bunch of overly energetic teenage kids in High School Musical. It's cheesier than a bowl of mac and cheese slathered in extra Edam.
Yup, first day of my job and this is my life now.
"No, man, it's like this," Asher is saying to the other two as he lifts his foot and taps it with his gloved hand, then does the same to the other foot before spinning around, his arms above his head.
I applaud him from my spot at the team bench as I lean over the boards for a clear shot. "That was awesome, Asher!"
He smiles at me before he returns to the lesson, and I watch once more as Cade and Weston do their best to copy Asher's moves.
I try not to laugh. Really, I do. But they look so dang funny next to Asher's sleek, honed dance skills, even the looks on their faces showing they're completely flummoxed by this new way of moving on the ice.
"Come on, man. I look like I'm having a seizure," Weston complains.
"Nah, you're doing great, Smith!" Asher says, not missing a beat. "It's all in the hips. It's just like you're trying to dodge a check, but make it sexy, eh?"
I snort laugh and am glad the guys are too engrossed in their dance routine to notice.
"Make it sexy? Dude, I'm wearing thirty pounds of protective gear and sweating like I just did suicide drills," Cade complains.
"No one wants to hear about your sweat, Lennox," Weston says, and he receives a shove from Cade.
"Yeah, sweat isn't sexy," Asher says before he transitions into the next move. "This is the move that gets all the likes. Just watch, okay?"
There really is something so endearing about watching some of the NHL's top players trying to nail a dance move that's probably meant for lithe teenagers with very different builds than these guys.

I survived chronic illness and a cheating ex. Surely I can resist one charming hockey player…right?
