Book Blitz & Giveaway: Dead Man’s Trigger [Max Maguire Vampire 01] by Kat Huddleston

Excerpt!

Max had discovered it was great fun to play with his food. He was hunting with George when he ran across a former gang banger turned hit man who liked to call himself Jack King. Max remembered him from his time on the streets and killing King seemed like a really good idea once the hunger set in. Max’s conscience found the game appalling, but the hunger driving him just ate it up.
He saw King coming out of a restaurant and recognized him right away. He was wearing a trench coat, making him look like a Black mobster. King was headed down the street, probably to his car. Max started shadowing him, while George hung back a bit to let Max do his thing. King spotted his tail almost instantly. He was a pro and he knew he was in trouble. The area was too populated for Max to take him right there, but a good chase would add some spice to the game.
King dropped his keys and Max knew he was checking him out, sizing up the situation. His gun was probably out, waiting. Max had never been shot before, but hey, why not? It wasn’t like it was going to kill him.
King stood and walked between the cars lined up along the street. Max followed him. King wasn’t afraid yet. He still felt he had control of the situation. He turned toward a car, as if to open the door, but Max saw the gun in his hand. He was about ten feet away when King turned and pointed the weapon at him. It was a .45 and had a silencer on it. Max was glad of that. It wouldn’t do to wake the neighbors.
“Do you want something from me?” King asked, ready for a fight.
Max smiled and walked a little closer. He held his hands out to show he wasn’t holding a weapon.
“Yes, I do. Are you going to shoot me? I don’t have a gun.”
“That depends on what you want. Who sent you?”
“Jimmie Large. I thought we might have a little chat.” Max leaned up against the trunk of a car.
   “Jimmie’s dead.”
   “I know.”
“He died of a heart attack.”
“Really? I thought I killed him,” Max said. King looked surprised. He caught sight of George lurking
in the dark, and took a long breath.
   “No loss, either way.”
   “No, it wasn’t,” Max said.
   “What do you want?”
“A little conversation. Maybe a bite later.”
   “I just ate.”
Max turned to face him and smiled. He brought his fangs out. “Funny, I haven’t.”
King looked horrified. He was expecting a hit, not a horror movie. He raised his gun and pulled the
trigger three times. The bullets hit Max in the chest and tore through his body. Max heard them hit the
pavement behind him. It hurt like hell for a moment and Max staggered back a bit. He looked down and
watched the bullet wounds heal. He touched one of the holes in his shirt.
“Ouch, that hurt... You ruined a perfectly good shirt.”
   “It’s a vest. It’s got to be a vest.”
King took aim at his head, but Max wasn’t ready to let his brain be turned into Swiss cheese, even if it
would probably heal. He focused on King and he suddenly had him by the throat. He took King’s gun and put it in his pocket, and then released him.
“I’d hate to have you mess up my hair,” Max said.
King fell back, terrified. The hunger inside Max was so happy. The man scrambled back. “What are
you?”
“You know what I am.” Max saw him reach for his ankle, no doubt headed for another weapon. “You
shoot me again and I’m really going to get pissed off... You don’t want that.”

Who Knew Immortality Could Be So Short?

When high school history teacher Max Maguire begins to suspect one of his brightest students is in trouble, he ends up walking down the wrong alley. Suddenly, he’s staring down the fangs of a beautiful, powerful, and utterly merciless vampire named Jade.

As Max’s life takes a dark turn he’s forced to learn how to survive in Jade’s twisted world. But if Jade thinks her hostage is going to play nice, she really should have read his resume. This former Special Forces sniper might just have to dust off some very lethal muscle memory.

While Max plots exactly how to kill the most dangerous predator on the planet, he discovers there’s another group of vampires that have their own plans for Jade. Before he knows it, Max is caught in the crosshairs of a vampire war that neither side can afford to lose.

And there’s one thing neither side knows… Max has a secret of his own.

Author bio:

Kat Huddleston has never met a perfectly ordinary day she couldn't improve with a vampire, a monster, or an alien invasion.

The result is Dead Man’s Trigger, the first book in her Max Maguire Vampire series, about a former Special Forces sniper turned high school history teacher turned vampire. He has military training, a talent for sarcasm, and a complicated relationship with being dead. Or is it undead?

Kat likes her supernatural creatures intelligent, her heroes complex, and her humor dark. Her vampires don't sparkle.

A Chicago-based writer, teacher, and award-winning artist, Kat spent a couple of decades writing about sci-fi TV and movies for the Syfy Channel’s website and Sci Fi Magazine. She's also written short stories and screenplays, taught fused glass, and created artwork that can be found in several galleries. Occasionally, she pretends she can concentrate on one thing at a time.

When she's not writing, painting, or melting glass in the name of art, Kat lives with her two cats, Jax and Nicky. They provide moral support, quality control, and unsolicited keyboard supervision. So far, neither has offered to help with marketing.
