Stacking The Shelves [84]!

Stacking The Shelves is a meme hosted by Tynga’s Reviews and Reading Reality where we show what books we got recently. I do this post once a month.

Stacking The Shelves is all about sharing the books you’re adding to your shelves, be it buying or borrowing. From ‘real’ books you’ve purchased, a book you’ve borrowed, a book you’ve been given or an e-book, they can all be shared!

Book Blitz & Giveaway: Loving Dark Men by J.A. Huss!

Excerpt!

   The guy.
He’s been missing since the first day. Well, maybe I’ve been missing. He’s never in the dining hall, and, of course, he’s not in the lab. And those are the only two places I go, so…
He smiles at me and my whole body goes tingly with the memory of what we did in the woods.
I stop walking and just stare. He’s leaning against a tree and immediately I see him the way he was that first day. He’s wearing something very similar—sweat shorts and a shirt tucked into his waistband.
   He must jog a lot.
He signals to me with a single finger. Not a wagging finger, but a point. Almost like he’s beckoning a waitress. I do a half-hearted wave back and turn to the coffee cart.
I don’t know what’s going through his mind right now, but I’m not interested. It was a one-time thing as far as I’m concerned, something I’m not going to dwell on or feel shame over, but there is no burning need inside me to force it to make sense.
It was… a need met. An itch scratched.
Hell, that’s giving it way too much credit.
It was a weird once-in-a-lifetime sexual opportunity that came about due to my new surroundings and—
   Once-in-a-lifetime? Really?
Fine. I’m slutty, what can I say?
I still don’t feel any shame.
And I do not look over my shoulder. Not before I order, not while I order, and not while I wait for my coffee.
I give him plenty of time to go somewhere else.
But when I turn, he’s still there. Lifting that one finger at me again.
And this time, he does beckon me. Then he turns and walks into the trees.
“Are you fucking kidding me?” I mutter this under my breath, then look around, to see if anyone is paying attention.
No one is, as far as I can tell.
When I look back at him, all I catch is his bare back disappearing into the woods.
Nova, you will not follow that man into the woods.
   Nova…
   Nova!
But I’m already walking in that direction. Because… that kiss. Holy shit, that kiss. I mean, I don’t think a man has ever kissed me like that. Well, maybe Travis. But that was his one and only chance. I was leaving the next day for college. And, in fact, we never did see each other again.
No. One teenager’s desperate attempt to make himself memorable is not the same as this man’s all-encompassing lust.
   Nova. You’re walking.
   Yes. I am.
   You’re walking towards the woods.
You’re very observant, monologue me. But save your breath. I’m going. At the very least, I need his name. I mean, what kind of man beckons a strange woman into the woods, helps her jerk himself off, comes in her hand, then just… walks away?
Not even a half-hearted ‘see ya later?’
   Not even a ‘thank you?’
I need something to add to this story. I can’t leave it like this. It will drive me crazy.

A man lures a woman into the woods.

Another ruins the life of his best friend.

And yet another strings them along like puppets.

Dark men.

They are intriguing, and charming, and powerful.

They are changing the world.

They are changing themselves.

They are playing with lust, and love, and fear, and loathing.

Addicted to each other, to their secret, to the seduction, to the sex.

It’s a crash in the making.

And yes, it’s on purpose.

These men are dark.

And this is the messy story of how Nova Ryan loves them.

Book Blitz & Giveaway: Taking the Fight [Gloves Off: Next Generation 02] by L.P. Dover!

Excerpt!

Heart racing, I closed my eyes, wishing like hell I could get Braden out of my mind. I’d misjudged him tonight and made a mistake because of it. I wanted to know why he initially turned Annika down. It wasn’t until he heard I was going to the ball with Finn that he’d changed his mind.
Again, I looked over at my handbag. Dammit! I’m going to call him.
Stomach in knots, I jumped off the bed and reached in my bag for my cell. I clicked on Braden’s number and was about to hit call when someone pounded on my door. It was late and I had no clue who it was. For all I knew, it could be Nikolai and I wasn’t about to invite that disaster into my place.
Slowly, I crept down the hallway and set my phone on the couch just as another knock vibrated the floor.
“Reagan, it’s me,” Braden shouted, his voice dark and impatient.
Blowing out a relieved sigh, I hurried to the door and unlocked it. The second it opened, Braden rushed in and slammed it closed. His shirt was unbuttoned, revealing his smooth, chiseled chest. I wanted to touch him.
“What are you doing here?” I asked, my voice just above a whisper.
Braden ran a hand through his dark hair, his eyes wild. “I need answers, Reagan. What the fuck is going on with you and the suit?” He grabbed me by the shoulders, and I sucked in a breath. The green of his eyes was darker: raw and intense. When I didn’t say anything, he stepped closer, tightening his grip on my shoulders. “You drive me crazy, Reagan. All I wanted to do was show you that I wanted you, but everything went to shit. I can’t take it anymore.”
My breaths came out in rapid pants. “What are you saying?”
His hands grasped my face, and he pushed me against the wall, his lips crushing mine. There was an urgency, a demand in the way he kissed me. It lit my entire body on fire. A moan escaped my lips, and I gave in as all the pent-up emotions I kept bottled up sprang out of me. I wanted him. I needed him.
I clutched his hair in my hands and held him to me, ravishing him the way he ravished me. Then, all too soon, he pulled away, leaving me breathless and wanting more.
“That’s all I needed to know.”
Turning on his heel, he walked out the door and I couldn’t move. I had to lean against the wall for support. My pulse raced so fast I could feel it pound in all my pressure points. Braden’s thunderous steps boomed down the stairs, and a few seconds later, I heard his car door slam and the rev of his engine. I traced my lips with my fingers, the electricity coursing through them as if Braden was still kissing me. What in the world just happened? Why did he leave so quickly after such a monumental occasion? If I didn’t taste him on my lips, I’d say I imagined it all.

Two months ago, everything changed. The enemy no longer feels the need to sulk in the shadows. Instead, he hides in plain sight and prepares his attack… against Reagan Jameson.

Reagan knew this day would come. She proudly holds the featherweight title and is known as one of the sexiest female fighters in MMA history. She can handle her own, and that’s exactly what she plans to do with Nikolai. Unfortunately, things aren’t as they were before. When given an offer she can’t refuse, Reagan is well aware nothing good will come of it.

They promised her power, prestige, and money… a world full of intrigue and dangerous desires. Not being able to resist the allure, she gives in and becomes a pawn in their game. She’s able to fool those closest to her into believing everything is okay… except for Braden Emerson.

Braden’s reputation as one of the toughest fighters in the circuit hasn’t gone unnoticed. In fact, it’s his skills that get him lured into the pit of danger. While he vows to keep Reagan safe no matter the cost, his desire for her is used against him. As passion ignites between the pair, they must work together if they hope to survive.

Fighting for a title is one thing, but nothing beats the stakes of fighting for love. This is one TKO that could cost them everything.

Book Blitz & Giveaway: Double Dog Dare [Milwaukee Growlers 02] by Tracy Solheim!

Excerpt!

His gaze shot to her lips. She was always so busy using them to snipe at him, that he never noticed how full and pink they were. He let his eyes roam lower. She had ditched the hobo clothes today in favor of a cute red, white, and blue sundress. The striped fabric enhanced her luscious curves.
   For fuck’s sake.
He had no business checking out Elizabeth’s cousin.
“If you’ll excuse us, we’ll be on our way. Enjoy your walk,” she said before lifting her chin and flouncing past them. Milli glanced back over Summer’s shoulder, making eyes at Monty. The idiot dog whimpered when Luke tugged him in the opposite direction.
Seconds later, the sound of Summer’s screech filled the air. Luke and Monty hurried back down the path.
“Ow, ow, ow,” she cried as she hopped toward one of the benches spread out along the trail. “Son of a biscuit.”
Milli protested with a yelp when Summer nearly plopped down on top of her.
   “What happened now?” Luke demanded.
   “Go away!”
   Shit.
Was she crying? He dropped to his haunches in front of her and grabbed her bare foot. A spiky ball from one of the sweet gum trees along the trail was embedded into the arch.
   “This might hurt.”
   “Don’t—ouch!”
He tossed the offending thing back into the brush. Both dogs followed it with their eyes but thankfully remained where they were. He rubbed his thumb over the bottom of her foot, applying pressure to where the thorn had entered to quell any bleeding. A long moment later, he lifted his gaze to her face. A pair of dilated pupils stared back at him. He froze when she bit her lip.
She came to her senses before he did.
“Are you trying to look up my dress?” she accused with that prim schoolmarm voice of hers.
He swore beneath his breath because, for a moment there, he was actually considering that very thing. And because he enjoyed pushing her buttons, he let her know.
“Summer Pearson, if I were going to look up your skirt, you’d know it. Because you would be begging me to do that and a whole hell of a lot more.”
The blush was back. This time not only on her cheeks but her neck and chest as well. She opened her mouth before quickly closing it again. He skimmed his palm up her calf before lifting her leg and draping her injured foot over the opposite knee.
“Sit. Stay,” he commanded the three of them before going to retrieve her missing flip-flop. When he returned, he crouched back down and slipped the star-studded thong onto her foot. “There you go, Cinderella. You’re ready for the ball.”
   “Thank you,” she whispered.
He lifted his head to meet her gaze. Her eyes held a look of sheer terror. For a split second, he wondered what he’d done now. But then he saw that Monty was resting his massive head on her thigh. It was the dog that frightened her.
“Monty, off.” The dog didn’t listen. “He’s worried about you.” He reached up to grab the dog by the collar, but she swatted his hand away.
   “No.”
Then she cautiously laid her palm on top of Monty’s head. Sighing, the dog shoved in closer. Milli whined, wanting in on the action. Luke snatched her up instead.
“Nope. We’re going to finish your walk while these two get acquainted.”
He took the dog several yards down the path. After a few minutes of dawdling, Milli finally relieved herself, and the two returned to the bench. Summer and Monty hadn’t moved. Her hand stroked from the top of his head down to his shoulder blades. Monty’s eyes were closed, and his breathing was even, as though he were asleep. That was not a slither of jealousy tightening up Luke’s groin. He lifted Milli onto his lap and joined Summer on the bench.
“You didn’t have to do that,” she said softly, her eyes still trained on Monty. “Walking her is the only exercise I get in a day.”
Luke snorted. “First of all, this dog doesn’t walk. She stops and starts. You’re not going to get any real exercise that way. Secondly, you should never walk a dog in flip flops.”
She did lift her chin then, shooting him a look through her lush lashes. “I’ve never had a dog before. I didn’t know there were rules.”
Whoa. Was that actual flirtatious charm Summer was throwing his way? Apparently she could use those full lips of hers for something other than snark. He was surprised how much he liked it.
He shook his head to regroup. Summer was Elizabeth’s cousin.

They say he who dares wins…

Luke Kessler is known for his daring play on the field and his carefully scripted life off it. The Growlers’ wide receiver has a strict rule of dating one carefully chosen woman per season, then letting her down gently. After all, his game is football, not love. That is until his dopey mutt falls for a French bulldog owned by a hot mess of a woman whose sassy mouth and mind-blowing curves have him fumbling his best laid plans.

After a humiliating concert performance played out in front of the world on social media, cellist Summer Pearson has sworn off a career in music. Forever. She’s hiding out with her grandparents in Milwaukee, licking her wounds and preparing for a predictable, if not boring, law career. The last person she needs challenging her life choices is a sexy, dog-rescuing jock who loves his grandma as much as he loves a good dare.

Especially when that same guy is dating her perfect cousin.

Kayt grew up in the midwest surrounded by a loving family, which included three brothers, one sister, and parents who always fostered her creative side.

She wrote her first book when she couldn’t find a story about a certain type of a woman and a specific kind of man. She called it “Game Changer,” and in couldn’t have been a more appropriate title. It changed her life in many ways.

Her author goal is to write stories that romance readers can relate to, while making readers laugh and sometime shed a tear or two. Kayt hopes her readers can escape into a fantasy, one that’s actually possible.

Sure, some of the stories are dubbed “insta-love,” but that’s okay. She fell in love with her husband pretty damn fast and with her daughter the second she saw her.

Cover Reveal & Giveaway: Sinful Queen [Dark Mafia Sins 05] by Emily Bowie!

He rules the Bratva,
but he wants to rule me.

Being the black sheep in a mafia family is hard. I desperately want to escape my life, and I thought I found a nice, boring, regular man to do that with.

Demertri Sokolov is anything but those three qualities. He rules the Bratva, making my family look like saints. He has a reputation for violence, cruelty and being unforgiving. My heart drums with anticipation each time I see him, even though I know it’s wrong. We have enough chemistry to explode a room. I should have known he was a horrible decision that I continued to play with.

When I find out I’m carrying his baby, I’m terrified. I’m left with no other choice but to run away. Instead of forgetting about me, he searches for where I disappeared. Hiding his baby is a sin not even a mafia princess will get away with when he finds out.

He may be handsome, but he’s not the type to fall in love. When he finds me, will he take mercy or kill because of my betrayal? Will he see a choice?

Book Blitz & Giveaway: Spark of Madness [Ember Glen 01] by Brynn Ford!

Excerpt!

The touch of leather against my cheek startles me. My eyes snap open as Arlo traces the trail of tears with the tip of his gloved finger.
"You're pretty when you cry, sinner," he whispers from behind me.
Sadness turns to anger, and I let go of the fabric at my chest to swat his hand away. "Don't touch me."
He snatches me by the wrist before I can bring my arm down, and whips me around to face him, bringing us chest to chest. "Are you finally seeing the full impact of your sins? Friends turning away from you?"
"They don't know what they're saying."
"I think they know exactly what they're saying. Your actions have consequences for everyone you care about."
I look at him squarely. "And what consequences will those you care about face when your sins come to light?" My threat of exposing our dirty secret is idle for now but reminding him that I could expose him is the only power I have in my life right now.
His jaw tenses and his eyes turn sideways, looking to see if anyone else is near enough to hear. "You haven't told anyone." It's a statement more than it is a question.
My shoulders sag. "No. I haven't."
   "Good choice."
   "No one would believe me."
   "Probably right."
"And they wouldn't care if they did."
"You're very insightful for a sinner."
"Is that all I am? From now until the day I die? I'm no longer a person, only a sinner?"
He clicks his tongue. "There's that golden insight of yours."
I look at our hands between our chests, realizing only then that his gloved palm has slipped from my wrist to curl around my fingers. He holds my hand so tightly that I can't pull away—and I'm not entirely certain I want to. I look up at him and he sucks in a breath as our eyes meet, then he blinks and releases my hand.
"Come along now," he says. "Delle's already gone back to the Homestead, and I'd like to check on her."
I don't wait for Arlo's lead; I move around him and stalk across the square at a quick pace. It's only a few steps before I feel his hand on the small of my back.
"I don't need you to lead me. I know where I'm going."
I twitch my hip, arching sideways and trying to shrug him away. His hand only slides around the side of my waist and grips me.
"Don't be ridiculous, Mercy. If I wanted to lead you, I'd place a collar around your neck and attach it to a leash."
I stop abruptly and look over at him. "I may be the sinner, but there's something deeply wrong with you, Warden Rainn."
He stares at me, blinking his bright blue eyes. "Just as there is with you, Mercy Madness."

In Ember Glen, men purge under the full moon. It’s the duty of women to serve them. When Mercy refuses to serve, Arlo will force her to find absolution through three brutal trials. But will their forbidden romance destroy their world?

Mercy
Neglecting my duty to serve is a sin, and during the last full moon, I became a sinner.

He saw me run from my duty, chased me, and caught me.
He promised me that I would be punished.

But I never could have imagined the hellish fate that would be chosen for me. More than that, I never could have imagined the maddening lust that would spark between me and the man who caught me.

This passion is forbidden…and it might set us on fire.

Arlo
It’s my role to catch the sinners, and Mercy sinned gravely.

I saw her and I chased her, drawn to her inexplicably.
She sparked something within me, but she had to be brought to judgment.

Her punishment is coming in the form of an archaic ritual we’re bringing back to make an example of her. I’ll be her warden, her keeper, the man to ensure she stays alive between her torturous trials.

Something within her brings out the worst of me…and the worst of me wants to ruin her.

Book Blitz & Giveaway: A Little Wilder [Wilder Adventures 04] by Serena Bell!

Excerpt!

   Something’s not right.
   Veronica’s parents are acting weird.
When I show up this morning for my weekly Friday morning visit, they don’t have their usual list of tasks for me.
Instead, they invite me in for a cup of coffee and some teacakes.
Veronica’s mom, Sigrid, keeps giving me these nervous looks. And Frank, Veronica’s dad, won’t meet my eyes at all.
I know what to do in these situations, though. I’m the fourth of five brothers—plus our sister Amanda—so six kids. I’ve spent a lifetime learning that if you don’t know what’s going on, you should sit down, shut the fuck up, and open your ears and eyes until you can get the lay of the land. Then, and only then, can you figure out how to fix whatever’s gone wrong. Patch it up. Smooth it over. Peace-make the shit out of it. So I listen.
Sigrid, Frank, and I have been talking about the weather for the last fifteen minutes or so. Admittedly, that is a subject of super close interest to me right now. But still.
“So they’re not making any snow?” Frank says.
“On the lower mountain, a little,” I tell him. “But it’s not like you can make a whole backcountry’s worth of snow if the weather decides to make this the worst snow season in the region’s history.”
   “Makes sense,” Frank says.
Both he and Sigrid are in their late seventies, and not in the greatest health. Frank lost a lot of mobility last year after a stroke. He can get around, but mostly with a walker. Sigrid has emphysema, and gets winded with the slightest exertion. So ever since Veronica and I got serious about each other, a few months ago, I’ve been coming over to their house to help out with anything I can—changing light bulbs, fixing minor plumbing issues, cleaning out the garage. It was my idea.
It started when Veronica mentioned that she worried nonstop about her parents staying put in their house, instead of moving into assisted living, and that she’d thought about hiring in-home care, but it was expensive, and her parents were stubborn. They didn’t want her to pay someone to put a safety railing in the bathtub! she told me, getting agitated.
I offered to install the bath bar. No big deal. The Wilder brothers may be outdoorsmen, but we were brought up to repair anything that needs fixing. So there aren’t too many around-the-house issues this handyman can’t tackle.
When I was installing the bath bar, I noticed that the tile needed regrouting, so I took that on. Then Sigrid asked if I could help her post some items for sale and giveaway online, since I’m a photographer. I was pleased to be useful, and didn’t fess up to her that it doesn’t take any special skill—or even my Nikon—to take those photos. And, well—the rest is history. I’m happy to help with repairs, and Sigrid is happy to bake for me.
Bonus: Veronica always thanks me for my efforts with lots of enthusiasm.
“Are you sure there isn’t anything I can do for you guys today?” I ask. As much as I enjoy Frank and Sigrid, I’m so tired of talking about this disaster of a ski season that I’d rather watch The Fault in Our Stars again.
Frank and Sigrid exchange looks. The small ball of unease in my belly turns into a thorny tangle of nettles. This has to be bad. Grim health news from Sigrid’s Monday visit to the pulmonologist maybe. Or Frank had another small stroke—he’s had a series of minor ones since the big one last year.
“Kane,” Sigrid says gently. “We have something to tell you. We hate to be the bearers of bad news.”
Oh, shit. Cancer. Alzheimer’s. Veronica will be crushed. I wonder if she already knows? It’s strange that this news would come from her parents and not from her—but maybe they want me to help cushion the blow. Maybe they want me to be with her when they tell her—so they need to prime me first.
“Veronica wanted to tell you herself. She really did. But she’s not very good if she thinks there’s going to be conflict. She’s—she’s actually terrible at conflict.”
Sigrid and Frank exchange another look, and my brain desperately, and unsuccessfully, tries to keep up with this new twist.
Sigrid sucks in a deep breath. “She really cares about you, Kane. But it’s just not working for her.”
   Wait.
   Wait an effing second.
“Are you breaking up with me?” I demand.
No. This is not a thing. Adult women in their thirties do not have their parents break up with their boyfriends for them.

What happened in Vegas? Definitely didn’t stay in Vegas.

Gabe’s the oldest. Brody’s the bad boy. Clark’s the strong, silent warrior. Amanda’s the girl. And Easton—well, Easton’s the panty melter.

I’m Kane.

Don’t get me wrong. It’s not a bad job. But usually, I’m not the one people are talking about.

That’s about to change. Because the woman I had a smoking hot one-night stand with in Vegas? The one I should have stayed far, far away from, since women like her are my kryptonite?

She’s the same woman my brother just hired to redesign his fancy new glamping RVs.

I haven’t seen her since Vegas, but the instant I lay eyes on her, I can tell my quiet role as the boy-next-door brother is about to change.

She’s pregnant.

And it’s mine.

Author bio:

USA Today bestselling author Serena Bell writes contemporary romance with heat, heart, and humor. A former journalist, Serena has always believed that everyone has an amazing story to tell if you listen carefully, and you can often find her scribbling in her tiny garret office, mainlining chocolate and bringing to life the tales in her head.

Serena’s books have earned many honors, including an RT Reviewers’ Choice Award, Apple Books Best Book of the Month, and Amazon Best Book of the Year for Romance.

When not writing, Serena loves to spend time with her college-sweetheart husband and two hilarious kiddos—all of whom are incredibly tolerant not just of Serena’s imaginary friends but also of how often she changes her hobbies and how passionately she embraces the new ones. These days, it’s stand-up paddle boarding, board-gaming, meditation, and long walks with good friends.
